Elizabeth Malone

Elizabeth Malone began Tempest in a Teacup Pottery out of a passion for living history combined with the love of ceramic arts.

Elizabeth first learned to create functional pottery back in 2002 rather than opting for traditional therapy.

For the next 15 years life got in the way and her wheel collected clay dust. Throwing caution and silicosis to the wind, in 2017 she once again blew the dust off her wheel and rekindled her lost love, this time focusing on French Saintonge style pottery, a utilitarian functional pottery found at the dig sites of many 18th century French settlements.

Described in the archeological records as “crudely done," Saintonge is characterized by the use of local clays, ranging in color between buff and deep red, a base of white slip, followed by a rather messy layer of green glaze.

As such, the imperfections in these pieces are in keeping with the original designs.
